Each time a significant awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a demand to include of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of fans with niche passions.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
